After a two-year wait, fans in the Atlanta area can finally see “The Raid 2,” Gareth Evans’ follow-up to the brilliant and critically acclaimed 2012 action hit.

The sequel takes place immediately after the events of the first film, with series protagonist Rama forced to go undercover and team up with an unlikely ally to regain his freedom and protect his wife and newborn. The plot is a bit bare and contrived, but as anyone familiar with the initial film can tell you, the focus of “The Raid” lies in its gorgeous cinematography and fight choreography. Simply put, “The Raid 2” does not disappoint, as it manages to up the ante on its predecessor in nearly every way imaginable. The violence is more gratuitous, the villains are more cartoonish, and the fights are bigger and better, with one memorable sequence giving “The Matrix Reloaded” a run for its money.

“The Raid 2” is now playing in several metro Atlanta theaters, including Regal Town Center Stadium 16 & RPX in Kennesaw.
